Just like normal meatballs but with a deliciously fresh Greek twist, this dish can be anything from a light meal to the main course but also a star of the mezze platter.
2 medium onions, chopped
700g beef mince
3⁄4 cup filtered water
5 slices of continental bread, moistened
1 clove of garlic, crushed
salt and pepper to taste
Combine all ingredients. Shape into small balls, or large flat cakes. Roll in flour; fry in olive oil.
Alternatively, you can prepare the meat mixture as above. Shape into large flat cakes, and arrange in baking dish. Mash 2 cups of canned tomatoes, or dilute 1 cup tomato paste with 1 cup water. Pour over meatballs; top with butter. Bake at 180c for 45 minutes, turning for even colour.
